2026 Aer Lingus College Football Classic Preview
The annual Irish college football game rolls into Dublin one again this weekend as the Bill Belichick led UNC Tar Heels take on the TCU Horned Frogs in the Aviva Stadium on Saturday evening. Belichick is likely the largest draw of this Week 0 clash – a household name even to the uninitiated – and despite being the defacto “away” side, can expect to garner the support of the native Irish American football fans in attendance.
UNC did not fare well the last time out against TCU, suffering a 48-14 defeat back in September 2025, so will certainly feel some added motivation to earn a win on Irish soil. Their coach is also under increasing pressure to produce a winning season, especially given the scrutiny he has faced throughout his short tenure. You wouldn’t know it by him though, considering his calm and almost jovial press conference on Thursday.
The NFL legend spoke at length about the growth of the game internationally, the challenges of performing on the field after a long haul flight and the weather ( it is Ireland after all!) But the question on everyone’s lips pertained to the game status of the young Irishman poised to make his college football debut in front of a home crowd. The response? Typical Belichick. “Still a long way to go.” was the summation, much to our dismay. In fact, the player in question – one Adam McCann-Gibbs – wasn’t even made available for media duties, which was strange given the circumstances. Another classic Belichick power move. When pressed further about whether we would see him in action or not, a coy smile and “maybe…” was all we got.
Taking into account that the vast majority of promotion for this game at home has hinged on one of our own being heavily featured, it would be exceedingly disappointing if he didn’t see the field even once, particularly when he has made the trip. But the game, and the show, must go on regardless.
So what exactly can we expect to witness on the field come 5pm on Saturday?
Well, TCU will be entering this bout as the heavy favourites. Not only did they fare much better last season, they are also a much more experienced side. Head Coach Sonny Dykes has been in situ since 2022, and has led his team to back to back bowl game victories. TCU also have an intriguing prospect at the Quarterback position: Jaden Craig. The former Ivy League signal caller hails from Harvard, where in 2025 he set single-season program records with 2,869 passing yards and 25 touchdowns. While Craig may not quite be a bonafide blue chip, he has the experience and skills to cause real problems for the Tar Heels defense this weekend.
The opposing sideline will be counting on Billy Edwards to lead the charge. Much like his TCU counterpart, Edwards is also a recent transfer, who previously played for Maryland, Wakeforest and Wisconsin. Edwards won a tight competition during training camp , and is now tasked with delivering a badly needed victory for the Heels.
Irrespective of the outcome of this year’s edition of the college football classic, there is bound to be a fantastic atmosphere around the place, with plenty of enjoyment guaranteed for fans new and old. And while the Americans may not have come in their masses ( only 14,000 compared to 40,000 back in 2023) there’ll still be enough blue and purple about the place to add to the proper college football gameday experience!
